You get one chance to get it right which is scary and thrilling all at the same time. You truly need to know the sport you are covering: it’s rules, it’s personalities, it’s rhythms. There are times when expensive equipment is essential however it’s sometimes even more important to know how to work around the athlete or the talent.
As the photographer, my goal is to find that dynamic composition which creates drama and tells a compelling story.
Rather than shooting everything at eye level, I’ll bring myself to an ants perspective or raise myself high above the action.
In this shot, behind the backboard was the best vantage point.
Combine a novel angle and direct or diffused lighting and you can transform the most unpromising scenes.
